The “Territory of Terror” Museum to Open the Exhibition on the History of Janowska Slave Labour Camp

On August, 30, at 12.30 a.m., the Memorial Museum of Totalitarian Regimes “Territory of Terror” (45 г Chornovola Ave.) will host the presentation for media on the exhibition “Janowska Slave
Labour Camp – Industry of Terror.” The exhibition displays the history of the Janowska slave labour camp that during the 1941-1944 Nazi occupation had been a center for Nazi terror in Lviv
and in Western Ukraine.
The presentation will engage:
Andriy Moskalenko – deputy city mayor for development,
Olha Lidovska – deputy head of the ‘Hesed Arieh’ All-Ukrainian Jewish Charity Fund
Mykhaylo Pleskov – president of Lviv regional organization ‘B’nej B’rit’ Leopolis,
Olha Honchar – director at “Territory of Terror” museum.

Janowska camp operations will be presented through the lens of testimonies and memories of victims and their perpetrators. The exhibition is interactive, filled with visual and audio materials,
and with artefacts showing various aspects of the camp routines. In addition, the exhibition includes a unique reconstruction of the view and location of former camp facilities made by the museum
staff on the basis of studying a volume of archive materials and field work on the current site. Upon the opening of the permanent museum exhibition, the display will be part of its locations – an
“industry of terror”.
At 10 p.m., there will be the opening ceremony of the exhibition for anyone interested, accompanied by light, sound and visual effects. The 3D background will help exhibition visitors understand the atmosphere of Janowska camp and get deeper into the key idea of the exhibition – to reveal the horrors of the camp life that transformed into a real industry of terror. Janina Hescheles, a
survivor of that hell, used to write later in her memories: “In front of us, in the Pisky, the fire of burning dead bodies was raging. The stench poisoned the air. I was longing for my dear mother but
did not fall into despair. I was envious of her because it was all over for her.”

The exhibition was designed on the basis of the sources from the Central State Historical Archives in Lviv, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, State Archives of Lviv oblast, Sectoral State Archives of the SBU, Archives of the SBU Board in Lviv oblast, Center for UrbanHistory of East Central Europe, State Archives of the Russian Federation, Yad Vashem Archive, and private collections.

The exhibition was designed by:
